12.06.202604:30:00UTC+00Japan’s April Capacity Utilization Drop Eases, Hinting at Gradual Industrial Stabilization

Japan’s industrial sector showed signs of easing pressure in April 2026, as the decline in capacity utilization moderated compared with the previous month. According to the latest data updated on 12 June 2026, capacity utilization fell by 0.8% month-over-month in April, an improvement on March’s sharper 1.2% decrease.

The month-over-month comparison indicates that while Japan’s factories are still operating below prior levels, the pace of contraction is slowing. The current figure reflects a smaller decline in utilization relative to March 2026, when capacity usage dropped more steeply compared with February. This suggests that, although demand and production conditions remain subdued, the industrial slowdown may be losing some of its momentum.

Market participants and policymakers will be watching upcoming data closely to see whether this softer decline in April marks the beginning of a more sustained stabilization in Japan’s industrial activity, or merely a temporary pause in a broader downtrend. For now, the April reading offers a cautiously more favorable signal than the previous month’s performance.
