21.08.202600:30:00UTC+00Japan’s Composite PMI Edges Higher in August, Signaling Firmer Private-Sector Momentum

Japan’s private-sector activity strengthened modestly in August 2026, as the combined Manufacturing & Services Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 53.40 from 52.70 in July. The latest reading, updated on 21 August 2026, indicates an ongoing month-over-month expansion in business activity.

The August uptick suggests that both manufacturing and services continued to grow at a slightly faster pace compared with the previous month. On a month-over-month basis, the “actual” comparison shows August improving on July’s performance, while the “previous” comparison captures July’s increase over June, underscoring a multi-month trend of incremental gains.

With the PMI remaining comfortably above the 50-point threshold that separates expansion from contraction, August’s data point reinforces signs of resilience in Japan’s private sector heading into the latter part of 2026. Investors and policymakers may view the continued improvement as a positive signal for near-term economic momentum.
