01.09.202601:30:00UTC+00Australian Building Approvals Slide 3.6% in July, Reversing June Surge

Australia’s building approvals retreated in July 2026, falling 3.6% month-over-month and reversing part of the sharp gain recorded in June, according to data updated on 1 September 2026. The decline follows a strong 7.2% increase in June 2026, highlighting continued volatility in the country’s construction pipeline.

The July reading, measured on a month-over-month basis, reflects a pullback in new approvals compared with June, when activity had accelerated markedly versus May. While June’s jump suggested a short-term resurgence in development intentions, the subsequent downturn in July indicates that demand for new residential and commercial projects remains uneven.

With building approvals serving as a leading indicator for future construction activity and related investment, the negative July figure may temper expectations for near-term growth in Australia’s building sector, especially after the strong but short-lived upswing in June.
