29.09.202623:22:46UTC+00UK Car Production Rebounds in August

Car production in the United Kingdom rose 6.1% year-on-year to 39,328 units in August 2026, the fastest pace since December 2025 and a sharp rebound from the 10.6% decline recorded in July. Total vehicle output increased 5.7% to 40,872 units, supported by stronger domestic demand, even though August is traditionally a low-volume and volatile month because of scheduled plant shutdowns.

Among the UK’s top 10 export destinations, Australia, Japan and the United States posted the strongest growth in car imports from Britain. By contrast, exports to the European Union fell 7.4%, and shipments to China were down 15%. The EU nonetheless remained the UK’s largest overseas market, accounting for 54.1% of all car exports.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) noted that fresh investment of more than £1 billion from McLaren, Nissan and Bentley underpins the industry’s long‑term outlook. However, it cautioned that the EU’s proposed “Made in Europe” provisions represent an existential risk to UK production, given the high degree of integration between the British and EU automotive sectors.
