08.10.202611:00:00UTC+00South Africa’s Manufacturing Output Slumps 3.1% in August, Reversing July Gains

South Africa’s manufacturing sector swung back into contraction in August 2026, with production falling 3.1% month-over-month, according to data updated on 8 October 2026. The decline marks a sharp reversal from July 2026, when manufacturing output had increased by 2.2% on a month-over-month basis.

The figures, measured on a month-over-month comparison, show that the momentum seen in July was not sustained into August. While July’s 2.2% rise reflected growth versus June, August’s 3.1% drop indicates a notable pullback in activity compared with July.

The downturn in August underscores renewed pressure on South Africa’s industrial base, highlighting ongoing volatility in manufacturing performance from one month to the next. Policymakers and market participants will now be watching subsequent data releases closely to assess whether August’s decline proves temporary or signals a more persistent soft patch in the sector.
