12.10.202623:50:00UTC+00Japan’s Producer Prices Slip Further in September, Deepening Deflationary Pressure

Japan’s Producer Price Index (PPI) declined further in September 2026, underscoring persistent deflationary undercurrents in the country’s production sector. On a month-over-month basis, producer prices fell by 0.3% in September, compared with a 0.2% decline in August 2026, according to data updated on 12 October 2026.

The data show that the downward trend in factory-gate prices is intensifying, with the current reading reflecting a sharper monthly contraction than in the previous period. The comparison is based on sequential changes, where the “actual” figure measures September’s price movement against August, while the “previous” figure captures August’s change relative to July.

A deeper negative print in the PPI suggests that cost pressures for producers continued to ease, which can provide some relief for input-heavy industries but may also signal weak pricing power and subdued demand. Market participants are likely to watch upcoming data closely to assess whether this decline in producer prices feeds through to broader inflation dynamics in Japan.
