13.10.202607:26:52UTC+00Slovakia Construction Output Falls at Fastest Pace in Nearly 2 Years

Slovakia’s construction output fell by 4.8% year-on-year in August 2026, reversing a 2.3% increase in July. This was the second annual decline of the year (after January) and the sharpest drop since September 2024.

The performance in the second month of the summer holiday period reflected a contraction in domestic construction output, which decreased by 3.0% after growing 4.7% in July. Within this segment, there were declines in all key areas: new construction activity, the dominant component, slipped by 0.7% after a 4.9% rise in the previous month; repair and maintenance of buildings fell by 6.4% following a 5.0% increase; and civil engineering works registered a 10.3% decline after growing 1.1% in July. Growth in building construction also slowed markedly, easing to 0.6% from 6.5% in the prior month.

Construction activity abroad weakened further, contracting by 16.0% year-on-year—the steepest drop since January—after a 13.5% decline in July.

On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, total construction output decreased by 4.9% in August. Despite the August setback, construction activity in the first eight months of 2026 remained 6.3% higher than in the same period a year earlier.
