Swiss Retail Sales Rise Most In 7 Months

Swiss retail sales increased at the fastest rate in seven months in January, data from the Federal Statistical Office showed Monday.

Sales turnover increased 4.4 percent year-on-year in January, following a 1.7 percent gain in December. Turnover increased for the fourth month in a row and the latest growth was the biggest since June last year, when sales rose 7.9 percent.

Excluding fuel, retail sales turnover grew 4.2 percent on a yearly basis, after increasing 1.7 percent in December. Retail sales of food, tobacco increased 1.9 percent and non food sector grew 5.3 percent in January.

Month-on-month, retail sales increased a seasonally adjusted 1.6 percent in January, following a 2 percent decline in December. Sales grew at the fastest pace in three months.
