Sweden's trade surplus increased sharply to SEK 5.6 billion in September from SEK 2.9 billion in August, preliminary calculations from Statistics Sweden showed Monday.

Exports totaled SEK 91.9 billion, up from SEK 84.1 billion in August. Likewise, imports rose to SEK 86.3 billion from SEK 81.2 billion a month ago.

However, compared to September 2012, the value of exports decreased 3 percent and imports fell 2 percent.

Trade with countries outside the EU resulted in a surplus of SEK 12.1 billion, which was partially offset by a SEK 6.5 billion shortfall in the EU trade.

Seasonally adjusted, the net trade surplus advanced to SEK 4.4 billion from SEK 4.1 billion in August.
