Hong Kong's merchandise exports volume rose 19.2% year-on-year in May, while imports of goods increased 22.7%, the Census and Statistics Department said Tuesday.

During the first five months of this year, exports rose 21% year-on-year in terms of volume and imports were up 27.2%. During the three-month period ending May, export volume increased a seasonally adjusted 5.2% compared to the preceding three-month period. Concurrently, the imports volume rose 2.1%.

Year-on-year, value of exports increased 4.1% and value of imports climbed 6.8%. Cumulatively, exports value rose 3.4% annually and imports were up 4.8%. The terms of trade index fell 2.5% on an annual basis and the index rose 1.4% during the January to May period.

In May, exports to Japan, the U.S, Taiwan and Mainland China recorded double-digit growth. Exports volume to Japan grew 27.4% compared to last year. Shipments to the U.S rose 22.8%. During the month, imports volume to Japan and Taiwan rose sharply.
