Ireland's unemployment rate eased for a second consecutive month in September, preliminary data from the Central Statistics Office showed on Tuesday.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 5.4 percent from 5.6 percent in each of the previous two months. A year ago, the jobless rate was 6.6 percent.

The number of unemployed persons dropped to 129,400 in September from 134,200 in August. In the same month last year, the figure was 156,200.

The youth unemployment rate, which applies to the 15-24 age group, fell to 12.9 percent in September from 13.9 percent in August.
