India's wholesale prices rose at a softer rate in February, data from the Ministry of Commerce & Industry showed on Monday.

The wholesale price index rose 2.26 percent year-on-year in February, slower than a 3.10 percent increase in January. Economists had expected a 2.65 percent rise.

Build up inflation in the financial year was 1.92 percent in February compared to 2.75 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Food price inflation increased to 7.79 percent in February from 11.51 percent in January. Prices for non-food articles rose 6.82 percent.

Fuel and power prices grew 3.38 percent after a 3.42 percent rise, and prices of manufactured products rose 0.42 percent.

On a monthly basis, the wholesale prices fell 0.6 percent in February.
