South Africa's manufacturing production fell for the fifth month in a row in October, preliminary data from the statistical office showed Tuesday.

Manufacturing output fell an unadjusted 0.8 percent year-on-year in October, following a 2.4 percent decline in September.

The largest negative contribution came from wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing, basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery, textiles, clothing, leather and footwear, and glass and non-metallic mineral products.

On a monthly basis, manufacturing output rose 2.7 percent in October, reversing a 2.4 percent fall in the preceding month.

For the three months ended October, manufacturing output rose 0.5 percent, after a 1.1 percent fall in the prior three months ended September.
