North Korea's economy expanded at the fastest pace in 17 years in 2016, Bank of Korea reportedly said Friday.

Gross domestic product grew 3.9 percent year-on-year driven by defense spending. This was the biggest growth since 1999.

The Bank of Korea estimated GDP based on information from government agencies and the intelligence group.

In 2016, China accounted for more than 90 percent of North Korea's trade, reports said citing the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency.
