South Africa's manufacturing output declined for the fourth straight month in September, data from Statistics South Africa showed on Thursday.

Manufacturing output dropped at a faster pace of 2.4 percent year-on-year in September, following a 1.5 percent fall in August.

The biggest negative contribution came from basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery, wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing, petroleum, chemical products and rubber and plastic products.

On a monthly basis, manufacturing output fell 2.4 percent in September, reversing a 1.3 percent rise in the previous month.

For the three month ended in September, manufacturing output fell 0.9 percent, following a 1.5 percent decline in the three month ended in August.
