Taiwan's consumer prices decreased at a faster-than-expected pace in April, figures from the National Statistics showed Tuesday.

The consumer price index fell 0.80 percent year-over-year in April, exceeding economists' expectations for a 0.65 percent decline. In March, prices had fallen 0.61 percent.

Prices of fuels and lubricants plunged 25.38 percent annually in April and utility costs went down by 11.84 percent.

At the same time, core consumer prices climbed 0.68 percent in April from the previous year.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.48 percent in April.

Data also showed that wholesale price index declined at a faster pace of 9.15 percent yearly in April, following a 8.75 percent decrease in March. Economists had expected a 7.8 percent drop for the month.Month-on-month, wholesale prices fell 1.07 percent.
