Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State, said that the US authorities intend to create a coalition that would prevent the construction of the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2. However, he did not clarify information about US potential allies.

The United States claims that the gas pipeline threatens the economic security of Europe. Most European countries may become dependent on natural gas pumping from Russia and Ukraine. Washington is also counting on Germany's support for banning the construction of Nord Stream 2.

Pompeo also added that the US would not ignore the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny. If the suspicions about poisoning are confirmed, the US may impose sanctions on Russia.

In December last year, the White House imposed new restrictions on companies involved in the construction of the Nord Stream 2. Swiss company Allseas which was engaged in pipe-laying decided to halt its operations in fear of US sanctions. Currently, Germany may introduce sanctions against the project, although earlier Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, reached an agreement with Russia on the construction of Nord Stream 2.
