European shares declined as Republican representative Donald Trump wins the U.S. presidential election with investors assessing the implications of his victory. The STOXX Europe 600 was down 0.7 percent.

Automakers and banks led losses amid the strong euro. Declines were curbed by the stocks of health-care that rallied. Novo Nordisk A/S and Shire Plc both climbed by nearly 4.8 percent. Trump's victory is an additional setback for the bloc which had to cope with Brexit, and also uncertainty regarding the health of its lenders and the efficiency of central-bank stimulus.

The German DAX contracted by over 400 points. Swiss stocks .SSMI rose 0.7 percent. Safe havens outperformed and rose in times of uncertainty. Fresnillo jumped ten percent and was the best performing stock in the Stoxx 600. Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA plunged 6.2 percent and Banco Santander SA was down two percent. Credit Suisse Group AG fell 3.5 percent as it relies on the Americas for more than the third of its revenue. Daimler AG retreated five percent.
