Bitcoin dropped after reaching its record peak, trading below $1,700, as assailants hit data in 200,000 computers last week and asked for ransom in the virtual currency.

The EU police office's head said a virus called WannaCry infiltrated 200,00 computers in some 150 nations. Hackers asked $300 in bitcoin for every computer. They gave three days in order to access the documents and warned to double the payment afterwards, before permanently prohibiting access after seven days.

Bitcoin stood close to $1,676.42 Monday, losing over 5%. The virtual currency steadied last weekend. Last Friday, it traded at $1,644.64 following it lost over $200 from an all-time peak of $1,848.75 touched Thursday.

CheckPoint, a security company, advised against giving any payment since no one who had already paid had retrieved their documents.
