2026.06.1109:30:00UTC+00South Africa’s Gold Output Slips into Negative Territory in April After Strong March Surge

South Africa’s gold production turned negative in April 2026, dropping to -0.2% year-over-year, according to the latest data updated on 11 June 2026. The shift marks a sharp reversal from March 2026, when gold output surged 17.1% compared with the same month a year earlier.

The data, based on year-over-year comparisons, show that while March benefitted from a strong rebound in production relative to March 2025, this momentum did not carry into April. Instead, April 2026 output marginally contracted against April 2025 levels, suggesting a possible normalization after the earlier spike or emerging pressures on the sector.

The move from double-digit growth to slight contraction within a single month will be closely watched by market participants and policymakers, given gold’s importance to South Africa’s mining industry and export earnings. Further data in coming months will help clarify whether April’s downturn is a temporary correction or the start of a weaker trend in gold production.
