2026.07.0609:00:00UTC+00Euro Zone Retail Sales Edge Back Into Growth in May After April Slump

Euro zone retail sales returned to modest growth in May 2026, offering a tentative sign of stabilization in consumer demand across the currency bloc. According to the latest data updated on 6 July 2026, retail sales rose 0.2% month over month in May, reversing part of the decline seen in April.

In the previous month, April 2026, retail sales had fallen by 0.4% compared with March, highlighting pressure on household spending. The May uptick, while modest, suggests that consumer activity is starting to recover as the sector moves out of negative territory on a month-over-month basis.

The figures are based on month-over-month comparisons, with the latest “actual” reading for May measured against April, and the “previous” reading for April measured against March. The improvement from -0.4% to 0.2% indicates that the euro zone’s retail sector may be finding a firmer footing after a weak start to the second quarter.
