Senegal’s annual inflation rate quickened to 1.2% in August 2026, up from July’s 14‑month low of 0.3%. This was the highest reading since May, driven mainly by a rebound in food and beverages inflation—the largest component of the consumer basket—which rose 1.4% after a 0.4% decline in July, the fastest increase in four months.

Inflation also picked up sharply in transport (1.7% vs -0.1% in July) and accelerated in several other categories, including health (2.0% vs 1.8%), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (12.6% vs 11.8%), and financial services (1.1% vs 0.6%).

By contrast, inflation was unchanged for recreation, sports and culture (0.8%), education (1.0%), and restaurants and hotels (2.2%). It eased slightly for clothing and footwear (1.1% vs 1.2%) and furnishings (0.6% vs 0.7%), while prices for housing and utilities continued to decline (-0.9% vs -0.8%).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 2.0% in August, doubling July’s 1.0% increase and marking the strongest monthly gain since July 2023.
