2026.10.1308:53:25UTC+00Italy's BTP Yield Retreats Further

The yield on Italy’s 10-year BTP fell below 4.55%, retreating to a one-week low as oil prices declined and ended a three-day rally. The move followed Russia’s decision to release diesel supplies onto global markets, easing worries over fuel shortages and reducing pressure for additional fiscal support to households.

Italy’s risk premium remained broadly stable, with the spread over safe-haven German Bunds holding near 110 basis points. Nonetheless, investors remain wary about the country’s fiscal trajectory. Italy’s debt-to-GDP ratio, currently at 138.6%, is projected to overtake that of Greece this year, making it the most heavily indebted country in the eurozone.

Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti stated that Italy is seeking approval from the European Commission for additional budgetary flexibility under the “National Escape Clause” in order to shield households from elevated energy costs. At the same time, the Bank of Italy cautioned that allowing the budget deficit to exceed the EU’s 3% of GDP limit in 2027 and 2028 could complicate Italy’s efforts to exit the European Union’s excessive deficit procedure.
