2026.10.1905:34:52UTC+00Rupiah Faces Headwinds From Dollar Strength and MSCI Concerns

The Indonesian rupiah hovered near IDR 18,040 per dollar on Friday, unable to sustainably break below the 18,000 level as a strong US dollar continued to exert pressure. The dollar index remained supported by euro weakness, reflecting investor concerns over violent protests in France and other parts of Europe, as well as intensifying hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.

Market sentiment toward Indonesia was further undermined by a warning from MSCI that the country could be downgraded to standalone market status next year, stoking fears of potential capital outflows. Such a downgrade would likely diminish Indonesia’s access to global investment and place its market in the same category as non-indexed economies such as Lebanon and Zimbabwe.

Investors are now focused on Bank Indonesia’s policy meeting later this week. The central bank has kept its key interest rate at 5.75% for three consecutive months through September, following a cumulative 100 basis points of hikes since May. At the same time, inflationary pressures persist: annual inflation accelerated to 3.28% in September, driven by stubbornly high food prices, adding to the central bank’s policy challenges.
