EU returns US draft on trade and tariffs for revision
Look what is happening! The European Commission has returned the draft joint statement on trade and tariffs to the United States. Many provisions of the document did not satisfy European leaders, and it now seems that it needs to be revised.
“I can confirm that we have sent back the draft joint statement to the US,” a representative of the European Commission confirmed. He added that discussions on the matter are still ongoing. The main figures involved in the talks are European Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
The draft was prepared by the US administration, which had earlier submitted proposals to the European Commission for revisions to the joint trade and tariff statement.
It is worth recalling that at the end of July, the EU and the United States reached a framework trade agreement. So far, however, only the basic tariff of 15% has been implemented. European leaders continue to expect the White House to issue executive orders introducing exceptions to the agreement, particularly concerning the automotive industry.
