Joe Biden turned out to be one of those optimists who believed that the US would avoid a default in any case. Just after the US Congress passed the debt ceiling law, Joe Biden said that he had no doubt about such an outcome.

He also added that he did not worry about possible default and was ready to resort to his presidential powers to avoid it. He was sure that Congress would not allow the country to face such a situation. Only actions of the Republican party were causing concerns. However, the president would allegedly do everything to prevent a default.

“I can’t guarantee that they wouldn’t force a default by doing something outrageous.  I can’t guarantee that. And it’s time for Republicans to accept that there is no bipartisan deal to be made solely — solely on their partisan terms.  They have to move as well. All four congressional leaders agree with me that default is not — let me say it again — default is not an option.  And I expect each of these leaders to live up to that commitment,” President Biden said at a press conference.

The US president even asked his advisors to find out whether he had the authority to raise the debt ceiling on his own according to the 14th Amendment. “I’m looking at the 14th Amendment, as to whether or not we have the authority.  I think we have the authority,” Biden pinpointed. However, there was a question of whether it was possible to take a decision without any appeal against it.
