Asian shares were mostly lower as other regional bourses evenly steadied following a session of turbulence after the U.S. presidential elections. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares excluding Japan fell one percent.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 jumped 1.8 percent to 17,681.50 while the Topix rose 1.6 percent. The Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.3 percent to a 10-month high. A gauge of Chinese share in Hong Kong declined to a three-month low following data that implied the economy held ground last month after new measures to cool property markets in nearly two dozen large cities. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down 1.1 percent. South Korea's Kospi fell 0.2 percent and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 down 0.6 percent. New Zealand's S&P/NZX 50 Index gained 0.6 percent, led by a four percent rise in Fletcher Building Ltd. after the earthquake. Benchmarks in Singapore and Indonesia fell to their lowest levels in over three months.
