In September 2025, India's consumer price inflation decreased to 1.54%, a decline from the previous month's rate of 2.07% and below the anticipated 1.7%. This figure represents the lowest inflation rate since June 2017, dipping beneath the Reserve Bank of India's lower tolerance threshold of 2% within its inflation-targeting framework. The food prices, which comprise nearly half of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket, decreased by 2.28%, marking the most significant drop since December 2018's record fall of 2.65%. Additionally, inflation eased in the categories of clothing and footwear (now at 2.28%, down from 2.33% in August) and fuel and light (now at 1.98%, down from 2.32%). In contrast, there was an uptick in price pressures in areas such as pan, tobacco, and intoxicants (rising to 2.73% from 2.49%), housing (up to 3.98% from 3.09%), and miscellaneous items (increasing to 5.35% from 5.05%).
