In September 2025, net borrowing of consumer credit by individuals in the UK dropped to £1.49 billion, marking its lowest level since May, and down from an upwardly revised £1.75 billion recorded in August. Net borrowing through alternative consumer credit channels, including car dealership finance and personal loans, declined to £0.8 billion in September, compared to £1.0 billion in August. Meanwhile, net borrowing via credit cards remained relatively stable at £0.7 billion, consistent with the previous month. The annual growth rate of all consumer credit saw a slight uptick, reaching 7.3% in September from 7.2% in August. During the same period, the annual growth rate for credit card borrowing increased to 10.8% from 10.5%, whereas the growth rate for other forms of consumer credit experienced a slight decrease, falling to 5.7% from 5.8%.
