In October 2025, private businesses in the U.S. managed to create 42,000 jobs, showcasing a recovery following a revised reduction of 29,000 jobs in September. This increase surpassed the anticipated growth of 25,000 jobs. This marked the first instance of job additions by private employers since July, although the growth wasn't uniformly distributed across sectors. The service-producing sector saw an increase of 33,000 jobs, spearheaded by trade, transportation, and utilities with a gain of 47,000 jobs, followed by education and health services which added 26,000 jobs, and financial activities with 11,000 additional positions. Conversely, job reductions were observed in professional business services (-15,000), information (-17,000), and leisure and hospitality (-6,000), continuing a downward trend for the third consecutive month. On the other hand, the goods-producing sector experienced an increase of 9,000 jobs, largely driven by natural resources and mining (7,000) and construction (5,000). However, manufacturing experienced a decline, shedding 3,000 jobs. Notably, annual pay growth remained stagnant in October in comparison to the previous month, maintaining a rate of 4.5% for those remaining in their jobs and 6.7% for those who changed jobs. "Pay growth has been relatively stable for over a year, suggesting a balance in supply and demand," noted Dr. Nela Richardson, ADP's chief economist.
