Total employment in Australia rose by 17,800 in January 2026 to a record high of 14.70 million, following an upwardly revised gain of 68,500 in December. The increase came in slightly below market expectations for a 20,000 rise. January marked the second consecutive month of employment growth, driven by a gain of 50,500 in full-time positions, bringing full-time employment to 10.16 million. This was partly offset by a decline of 32,700 in part-time jobs, which fell to 4.55 million.

The employment-to-population ratio dipped marginally to 63.9% from 64.0% in December, while the participation rate was unchanged at 66.7%. Year-on-year, total employment increased by 150,200, equivalent to a 1.0% rise.
