Chile’s industrial production contracted by 7.5% year-on-year in May 2026, deepening from a 4.7% decline in April and marking the steepest fall since March 2017. The mining production index dropped 10.6%, led by a 13.0% slump in metallic mining, primarily due to reduced copper extraction and processing, which fell 12.9%. Manufacturing output also weakened, decreasing 7.2% compared with a year earlier, largely reflecting a 10.9% decline in food production. By contrast, utilities output rose 1.0%, supported by a 1.7% increase in electricity generation, mainly driven by higher solar power production. On a monthly basis, overall industrial production edged down 0.4%.
