Malta’s industrial production rose by 0.8% year-on-year in May 2026, slowing from a revised 6.2% increase in April. Growth in the manufacturing sector also eased, to 1.1% from 6.9% in the previous month, as output was dragged down by notable contractions in other manufacturing (-11.4%), rubber, plastic and other non-metallic mineral products (-7.6%), and food products and beverages (-5.9%).

Across the main industrial groupings, output declined for consumer goods (-0.6% vs. 6.4% in April) and consumer non-durable goods (-2.3% vs. 6.8%), while the downturn in capital goods deepened (-7.7% vs. -0.6%). At the same time, growth in intermediate goods output moderated to 8.2% from 11.5%, and the contraction in energy production eased (-6.8% vs. -9.2%). In contrast, production of consumer durable goods accelerated significantly, rising 15.1% after a 3.1% increase in April.

On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, overall industrial output fell by 3.7% in May, reversing a revised 3.5% gain recorded in April.
