2026.07.2901:30:00UTC+00Australia’s Weighted Mean CPI Eases to 0.7% in Q2 2026, Signalling Slight Inflation Cooldown

Australia’s weighted mean Consumer Price Index (CPI) edged down to 0.7% quarter-over-quarter in the second quarter of 2026, from 0.8% in the previous quarter, according to data updated on 29 July 2026. The weighted mean measure, which smooths out volatile price components to give a clearer view of underlying inflation, indicates a modest easing in price pressures.

On a quarter-over-quarter basis, the latest reading shows that while inflation remains present, its momentum is slightly weaker compared with the previous quarter’s 0.8% increase. The “actual” figure reflects the change in prices from Q1 to Q2 2026, while the “previous” comparison captures the shift from Q4 2025 to Q1 2026.

The small decline in the weighted mean CPI may be interpreted as an early sign of stabilising underlying inflation dynamics, though price growth remains positive. Market participants and policymakers will likely watch subsequent quarters closely to assess whether this softening becomes a sustained trend or a temporary moderation in inflationary pressures.
