Japan’s current account balance posted a sharp reversal in June 2026, shifting from a substantial surplus to a deficit, according to the latest data updated on 9 August 2026.

In May 2026, Japan’s non-seasonally adjusted current account stood at a surplus of 3.968 trillion yen. By June 2026, however, the indicator had fallen into negative territory, registering a deficit of 0.092 trillion yen.

The abrupt swing from a strong surplus to a modest deficit within a single month underscores a marked deterioration in Japan’s external balance position during June, highlighting a significant change in the country’s current account dynamics as the second half of 2026 begins.
