Iron ore futures rose above CNY 720 per ton, approaching a two-week high, as signs of tighter short-term supply and potential disruptions lent support to prices. Industry data showed that global iron ore shipments fell by 1.38 million tons in the week ending August 9, to roughly 32 million tons. Over the same period, arrivals at Chinese ports plunged by 13.1 million tons to 18.9 million tons.

Supply concerns were further amplified as more workers joined a strike at BHP’s Port Hedland iron ore export hub in Western Australia, although vessel loading has so far continued.

On the demand side, China imported 108.086 million tons of iron ore and concentrates in July, a decrease of 4.09% from June but an increase of 3.5% compared with a year earlier, according to the latest data. Figures released over the weekend also indicated that both consumer and producer inflation in China eased in July, underscoring persistent weakness in domestic demand.
