Total household debt in the United States fell by $13 billion from the previous quarter, reaching $18.794 trillion in Q2 2026. Mortgage balances declined by $74 billion to $13.1 trillion as of the end of June, while student loan balances decreased by $7 billion to $1.65 trillion. In contrast, home equity lines of credit (HELOC) rose by $13 billion to $459 billion, credit card balances increased by $21 billion to $1.26 trillion, and auto loan balances grew by $28 billion to $1.71 trillion. “Delinquency rates across most products have held steady over the past two years,” said Joelle Scally, Economic Policy Advisor at the New York Fed. “However, new delinquencies on auto loans and credit cards remain elevated, a trend we will continue to monitor.”
