2026.08.1314:06:34UTC+00TSX Holds Record on Earnings and Lower Oil

The S&P/TSX Composite Index was little changed, hovering just above 36,500 and holding near yesterday’s record high amid a new wave of corporate earnings and softer oil prices.

Among individual names, Brookfield (+0.5%) reported higher second-quarter distributable earnings per share. Hydro One (+1%) posted stronger profit, with EPS of C$0.62 topping forecasts. Metro (+1%) delivered 4.1% sales growth and an 8.8% increase in adjusted EPS; however, same-store food sales were subdued and fiscal third-quarter adjusted earnings were weaker. CCL Industries (-1.2%) recorded 9.1% sales growth and a 10.7% rise in adjusted EPS.

Pan American Silver (-7%) reported a 38% jump in revenue and robust free cash flow, but its EPS of $0.73 fell short of expectations.

In commodities, oil prices declined on signs of softening demand. In contrast, easing inflation pressures in the US—after a benign PPI print—supported financials and other interest rate–sensitive sectors. RBC and TD Bank each gained 0.5%, while CICB advanced 1%. Miners weakened alongside lower gold prices, with Agnico Eagle falling 1.5%.
