2026.08.1623:50:00UTC+00Japan’s Q2 2026 Capital Expenditure Falls Further, Signalling Softer Investment Momentum

Japan’s GDP capital expenditure declined by 1.2% quarter-over-quarter in the second quarter of 2026, marking a deeper contraction than the previous quarter and underscoring weakening investment activity in the economy. The latest figure, updated on 16 August 2026, follows a 1.0% quarter-over-quarter drop in the first quarter of 2026.

The data show that the pace of decline in corporate and public investment has intensified, with the “actual” Q2 reading comparing the current quarter’s change to the first quarter, while the “previous” Q1 reading reflected a comparison with the final quarter of the prior year. The back-to-back quarterly declines in capital expenditure point to mounting headwinds for Japan’s growth outlook, as softer investment typically weighs on future productive capacity and economic momentum.
