2026.08.2405:51:29UTC+00NZX 50 Ends 0.7% Lower, Communication Services Weigh

New Zealand equities retreated on Monday, with the benchmark index falling 91 points, or 0.7%, to close at 13,882. The move erased the prior session’s gains and pulled the market back from Friday’s high, which had marked the strongest level since August 5. The decline was led by weakness in communication services, financials, technology, and consumer staples, mirroring a drop in US stock futures as investors attempted to recover from last week’s selloff driven by a jump in Treasury yields.

Strong post-earnings rallies in some names were not enough to support the broader market. Communication services were the biggest drag, down 2.7%, with Chorus sliding 5.3% despite reporting a sharp increase in net profit. Sentiment was further dampened by fresh macroeconomic data showing that New Zealand retail sales fell for the first time since the third quarter of 2024.

Investors remained cautious ahead of a slew of corporate earnings due later this week. Among the notable laggards were Mainfreight (-2.2%), EBOS Group (-2.1%), Hallenstein Glasson (-2.4%), Infratil (-2.1%), Freightways Group (-1.7%), and A2 Milk (-1.4%).
