2026.08.2509:57:03UTC+00Oil Extends Fall as US Tightens Iran Sanctions

Crude oil prices fell below $83 per barrel on Tuesday, extending the previous session’s losses, as the United States escalated economic pressure on Iran and its trading partners, reportedly including China. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent outlined plans to further isolate Iran through sanctions on countries that continue doing business with the Islamic Republic. President Donald Trump added that these nations would be given a defined timeline to cut ties with Tehran or face unilateral U.S. penalties.

Market participants remain uncertain whether the U.S. measures will hasten or delay a potential resolution to the U.S.–Iran standoff and the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, risks to energy supplies in the Middle East remain elevated. The UK Navy reported that an oil tanker was struck and disabled near Oman, while Iran-backed Houthi militants claimed they had fired on a Saudi Arabian supertanker transiting the Red Sea.
