The TAIEX, Taiwan’s benchmark stock index, rose 81 points, or 0.2%, to close at 47,800 on Tuesday, extending its winning streak to a fifth consecutive session and setting a fresh record high. The index briefly climbed above the 48,000 mark intraday before easing back to its closing level.

The broader market followed an overnight rally on Wall Street, driven by strength in AI-related stocks, while easing oil prices and lower US Treasury yields also supported risk appetite. Sentiment was further buoyed by optimism over this week’s Trump–Xi summit, where AI and tariffs are expected to feature prominently on the agenda.

The electronic technology sector gained 0.4%, underpinned by strong advances in MediaTek (up 3.5%), ASE Tech (up 4.5%), and Unimicron Tech (up 9.8%). In contrast, TSMC — the world’s largest contract chipmaker and a heavyweight accounting for more than 40% of the TAIEX’s total market value — slipped 0.4%. Earlier in the session, TSMC had traded higher on reports that it was in talks to acquire AUO’s 5th- and 7.5th-generation fabs in the Central Taiwan Science Park.
