Greece’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 7.4% in August 2026 from 7.9% in July, marking its lowest level since May 2008. The improvement was driven by a decline in the number of unemployed, which dropped by 25,656 compared with the previous month and by 67,181 year-on-year, to 350,800.

Employment continued to strengthen, with the number of people in work increasing by 17,322 on a monthly basis and by 85,042 compared with a year earlier, reaching 4.41 million.

Unemployment remained significantly higher among women, though the female rate edged down to 10.3%, versus 4.9% for men. Younger workers continued to face greater challenges: the unemployment rate for those aged 15–24 stood at 15.6%, while the rate for the 25–74 age group was 6.9%.

The number of people outside the labour force under the age of 75 rose by 4,130 compared with July but was 60,682 lower than a year earlier, standing at 2.94 million.
