2026.09.3009:30:00UTC+00South Africa’s PPI Deflation Eases in August, Signalling Mild Upturn in Producer Prices

South Africa’s producer price index (PPI) decline moderated in August 2026, suggesting a slight easing of deflationary pressure at the factory gate. Month-over-month, PPI registered a -0.4% change, an improvement from the -1.0% recorded in July 2026.

The latest data, updated on 30 September 2026, indicates that while producer prices are still falling compared with the previous month, the pace of decline has slowed. On a month-over-month basis, the “actual” August reading of -0.4% reflects a smaller contraction than July’s “previous” figure, which compared July to June 2026.

For market participants and policymakers, the softer negative reading may hint at stabilising input costs for producers. However, producer prices remain in deflationary territory, underscoring continued cost pressures and subdued pricing power in the industrial sector. Traders and analysts will be watching upcoming releases closely to see whether August marks the beginning of a broader trend toward producer price normalisation.
