Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Monday pledged to “appropriately” manage the size of annual government debt issuance, emphasising that fiscal discipline and economic resilience are essential to strengthening confidence in the yen and stabilising public finances. Speaking before parliament, she highlighted the need to balance economic growth with fiscal responsibility as Tokyo contends with a $7 trillion debt load—the largest among advanced economies—and fresh volatility in the bond market. Her comments were intended to reassure investors after the recent selloff exposed renewed concerns about Japan’s fiscal outlook.
